How to Dual Boot Ubuntu and Windows 11 ?

Hey everyone, in this tutorial we’ll show you how to set up a dual-boot system using Windows 11 and Ubuntu 22.04 LTS.

You must already have Windows 11 installed on your computer for this to function. Then, in order to install Ubuntu 22.04, you must make a separate partition on your hard drive. Don’t be concerned; we will go through everything.

Prerequisites

Here is everything you need before you start the dual-boot configuration.

  • Ubuntu 22.04 on a bootable USB device Visit the Ubuntu 22.04 download page to access the Ubuntu 22.04 ISO file. Grab a 16GB USB drive and use the Rufus utility to make it bootable once the ISO image is ready.
  • a dependable and quick internet connection.

Step 1: On your hard drive, create a free partition.

As stated in the introduction, the first step is to make a separate partition on the hard drive for Ubuntu 22.04.

So, hit Windows Key + R to launch the disc management tool.

Type diskmgmt.msc into the dialogue box and press Enter.

The current disc partitions are seen in the disc management console, as shown below. By shrinking “Volume E,” we’ll make a partition on our computer for installing Ubuntu. Your setup could be different, but if you just follow along, you’ll get the idea.

Therefore, right-click on the volume you wish to reduce and choose “Shrink.”

As seen below, a pop-up dialogue box will display. By entering the desired shrinkage in MB, click the “Shrink” button.

This area has been set aside for the installation of Ubuntu 22.04.

The space will show up as “Unallocated” or “Free Space” after being shrunk.

Plug the bootable USB media into your PC and restart it once the space has become available. Additionally, make sure you open the BIOS configuration and change the boot priority to put the USB drive first. Proceed to boot after saving the BIOS adjustments.

Step 2: Begin the installation

You will see the GRUB menu shown as seen on the first screen. Press ENTER after selecting the first choice, “Try or Install Ubuntu.

As seen below, Ubuntu 22.04 will begin loading. This just only a minute.

The installation procedure will then appear and give you the choice of installing Ubuntu or trying it out. Choose the latter option as installing Ubuntu is our goal.

Click “Continue” after choosing your favourite keyboard layout.

Choose “Normal Installation” in the “Updates and Other Software” stage to install Ubuntu’s GUI version, and then check the remaining boxes to enable the download of updates and the installation of third-party software for graphics, WiFi devices, and other utilities.

then press “Continue.

There are two alternatives for installation in the subsequent phase. Erase Disk and Install Ubuntu is the first option, which totally erases your drive and instals Ubuntu. However, because this is a dual boot configuration, choosing this choice would be devastating for your current Windows installation.

So choose “Something else” and press “Continue.

All of the disc partitions that are currently in use are shown in the partition table. We currently just have the NTFS partitions and the previously reduced free space.

we will create the following partitions:

  • /boot          –        1  GB
  • /home        –        10 GB
  • /                 –        12 GB
  • Swap         –         2 GB
  • EFI             –        300 MB

Click the [+] button next to the “Free Space” partition to begin working with the partitions.

Click “OK” after entering the /boot partition’s information as displayed.

Then, enter the /home partition and press “OK.”

click on ok.

Set the size and choose “Swap area” for the “Use as:” option to specify the swap space.

Finally, if you’re using UEFI boot mode, make an EFI system partition. We’ll provide the EFI partition 300 MB.

The partitions in our partition table are listed in the table below.

Click “Install Now” to begin with the installation. To save the modifications to the disc, select “Continue” from the pop-up window below.

The installation process will then automatically determine your location. Just select “Continue.

Next, give the name, computer’s name, and password to establish a login user. then press “Continue.”

The installation procedure will now install the necessary software packages and copy all of the Ubuntu files and packages to the manually constructed hard disc partitions.

  • Be patient; this procedure takes a while. In the case of ours, it took around 30 minutes.
  • To restart the system when the installation is finished, select “Restart Now.”
  • Remove your bootable USB device at this stage, then click “Enter.”
  • You will get all choices for both Windows 11 and Ubuntu when the machine restarts.
  • To boot into your fresh installation of Ubuntu 22.04, select “Ubuntu.” Choose the “Windows Recovery Environment” item to start Windows 11.

There you have it, then. We have shown how to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 11.
